Today, only the bigger islands like Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian and Kapas have resort facilities for visitors. Take a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu. Kuala Lumpur is the federal capital of Malaysia, and it is the main hub for international flights coming into the country. Kuala Terengganu is the capital of Terengganu — a province in peninsular Malaysia. If you've never heard of it, you're not alone.

Many locals had never heard of it either until the last decade. Even today, some folks confuse it with 'rendang' referring to a delicious local dry curry dish. For the layman, Redang lies close to the equator, somewhere in the South China Sea off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Geographically, it is located about 45km north-northeast of Kuala Terengganu KT , the state capital of Terengganu and gateway to Redang, with the closest point on the mainland 22km away at Tanjung Merang.

Close enough that on a clear day, you should be able to see the mainland from Redang. From Merang jetty, the journey by boat takes minutes while the journey from KT Shahbandar jetty takes about 90 minutes. Redang is also within an hour's boat ride from the other popular vacation islands of Perhentian and Lang Tengah.

Hot and humid describes most days at Redang. There is a distinct dry and rainy season though visiting season is restricted to the dry season. The rainy season is between November and March when the northeast monsoon brings torrential rains and rough seas.

All resorts are closed during the rainy season so if you're hoping to experience the kind of waves seen on Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch, you're out of luck. Visiting season from March to October coincides with the dry season when seas are generally calm with little rain. Photographers will be happy to note that sunrise at Redang varies between the earthly hours of am to am depending on the time of year.

The cheapest way to get there is by flying with the low cost carrier AirAsia. Other options are Malaysia Airlines or FireFly. Tickets are often available for approximately 25 euro's per person if you buy them beforehand. It is even cheaper during special offers.

The boat ride to the island of Redang departs from Merang jetty and takes about 40 minutes to reach the island. Boat operators between Merang and Redang work with fixed prices for a boat ticket RM80 for an open return ticket. During peak season there are also boats that depart from Shahbandar jetty in Kuala Terengganu city center.

The quickest way to get to Redang Island is by direct flight with Berjaya Air. Though this is definitely the best way to get to the island, it is also by far the most expensive way as a return ticket will cost over RM per person.

Do check up front if the resort has a reef in front of the resort; it is just so much more fun if you can go snorkeling right in front of your cabana. When traveling from Merang Jetty to Redang, boat operators almost always charge the same price RM80 return trip so there is no point in waiting with the reservations. Make sure you arrive at Merang Jetty well before 4pm last boat to Redang departs around 5pm. Try to avoid the last vessel as it is always the busiest.

Last boat from Redang to the mainland departs at 1pm daily. Backpackers or low budget travelers should head over to Perhentian Island as there is far more basic accommodation available. If you want to get your diving license make sure you make the necessary arrangements beforehand as the diving school needs to have a dive master available.
