If you went with green shutters, etc. Fake dormers or something would add some oomph to the roof and windows. That's what I'd do for an addition, too if you did carriage-house style, as in, garage with living space above.
I'd carefully research that in your market though-a lot of people don't like living above a garage. I'm thinking that it would appeal to more buyers and be more practical by adding onto the main level. Maybe make it into an attached fully-contained suite and rent it out if you are allowed to legally? Or use it for your own needs, but then maybe down the road someone would appreciate it for an elderly parent when you sell? Maybe add some window boxes with some bright red geraniums and bright white ones, and some interesting grasses for height, softness and texture and heck, if you felt patriotic, lol, you could add some dark blue salvia as well!
You could also add a little white picket fence along the front and side and have a really neat gate. Plant away along the fenceline with whatever your heart desires, or carry on the patriotic theme and alternate those colours and plants. I'd plant a couple of urns up and flank your current stairs. You could plant them with the same as the window boxes or something different.
Ornamental kale, ivy, grasses, petunias If the back fence is weathered and you aren't keen on it, I've power-washed old wood and revived it for nothing more than numb-thumb and time, lol. It's a cheap way to add life. Oh yes, one more thing I'd add--a little flower-bed in the middle of the lawn. Plant some nice flowers below a flowering cherry tree or a pink or white dogwood perhaps. Or maybe a nice purple lilac for scent and flowers? Or a cool Gingko Biloba tree?
